Headaches

. Chronic Headaches:

  • Accompanied with shortness of breath = a sign that environmental toxins are present.
  • Harmful effects due to the internal environment of the ‘modern’ office building = harmful air quality and continual electrical smog. This will be accompanied with feeling down and tiredness, an inability to concentrate and frequent sleep disturbances.  Eye irritations are noticeable and bronchial complaints
  • Cluster headaches are distinguished by intolerable, boring pain travelling upwards and laterally usually to one eye. The attacks last for up to 2 hours and occur up to six times per day for up to 6 weeks.  Men are the main sufferers and stress to be a component of their lives to which they cannot say ‘no’.  During a cluster headache, an affected eye becomes red and water strongly, while the nose runs constantly  It is assumed that the cause is overstressing of the 7th and 10th cranial nerves
  • Tension headache is the common headache. Dull, oppressive, heavy and not located in any specific region of the head. It is usually first experienced on waking up and may persist for several weeks.  Physical conditions may also be found in particular, chronic sinus infections and arthrosis of the cervical spine and disturbances of the temporom and ibular joints
  • Stress headaches can also been seen as tension headaches and caused by stress during work and spare time. Stress constantly sets adrenaline free in the suprarenal glands, thus the blood vessels are continuously constricted – particularly the cerebral region. Increased adrenaline production leads on to an increased glucose ration – adrenaline is an antagonist to insuline. The consequence is ischaemia with insufficient oxygen supply and then the headache.  This pain is extremely oppressive as if the head would burst and blood pressure rises
  • Weather sensitivity headaches is usually because there is a vegetative nervous systems and therefore a weakness of blood vessels. Thus with air pressure fluctuations and abrupt changes in air pressure, the threshold of sensation of vegetative nervous systems becomes lowered.  The concentration of the parasympathetic neurotransmitter serotonin in the blood rises with the advent of certain warm weather conditions. This chemical has the potential to excessively dilate the capillaries and thus cause headaches.   In these cases calcium antagonists work well as a temporary measure.  Certain susceptible humans also react sensitively to the electrical discharges of air masses and electrical smog.  Exercise can help and alternating hot and cold showers.  Foods with histamine, tyramine (cheese, red wine, citrus fruits) and phenylethyldiamine (chocolate) are to be avoided.  Also plastic sport clothes such as ‘track suits’ or ski suits should be avoided since they may become enormously charged with static electricity.
  • Food Allergy Headaches caused by foods

Chemicals agents:

Alcohol                                 Monosodium glutamate                       nitrates/nitrites

Theobromine                     caffeine                                                       benzoic acid

Phenylethylamine           food dyes                                                    tyramine

Salicylates

  • Hypothyroid —  Check the symptoms and talk to your doctor
  • Dehydration.  Tea and coffee do NOT count as having a drink.  How much water have you consumed today
